Bolton, Vermont, known as "the land of boulders and bears", is located 20 miles southeast of Burlington. The community of approximately 1,000 residents boasts Bolton Valley Resort, a ski and snowboard park that also manages nordic terrain. Long Trail, a 273-mile hiking trail running the length of the state of Vermont, runs through Bolton. It is the oldest long-distance trail in the U.S. and is complemented with plenty of campgrounds, shelters, side trails, creeks, and streams. Bolton Recreation Committee is a volunteer organization that heads up family play nights, basketball leagues, and special events. Smilie Elementary is located in Bolton, but community children move onto Camels Hump Middle School in Richmond and Mount Mansfield Union High School for further education.
